Altogether, there are three rhetorical questions and nine exclamations in The Prisoner of Chillon . In the Sonnet on Chillon there are five exclamations and no rhetorical questions at all. Such a difference in usage of such strong emphatic means, as exclamation, and rhetorical questions are for the English language, is caused by the narrative manner of The Prisoner of Chillon , which is thoughtful, sorrowful, tenderly sad and placate.
