Реферат Лексика в художньому тексті

athology», «cancer», «tumor».

Unlike Vivian, who still thought of her problem as a small bump below the knee - a nuisance, but something which treatment on one kind or another would clear up - Mike Seddons knew the implications of the phrase « suspected osteogenic sarcoma ». He knew that if the diagnosis were confirmed it would mean that Vivian had a virulent, malignant tumor which could spread, and perhaps already had, elsewhere in her body. In that event, without swift surgery, her chances of survival beyond a year or so were almost nil. And surgery meant amputation of the limb - with all speed once the diagnosis was confirmed - in the hope of containing the spreading, poisonous cells before they moved too far beyond the original site. And even statistically only 20 per cent of osteogenic patients were free from further trouble after amputation. The rest went steadily downhill, sometimes living only a few more months.it did not have to be osteogenic sarcoma. It could be a harmless bone tumor. The chances either way were fifty-fifty-odds even, the same chance you got with the spin of a single coin. Mike Seddons felt himself sweating at the thought of, how much - both for himself and Vivian - was riding on the biopsy result.

Coleman took the slide and moved to the microscope when he had adjusted the eyepiece the characteristic worm-like bacteria were visible at once. He straightened up .. Straughan asked, «What is it? What does it mean? »Said thoughtfully,« The slide shows gasforming bacteria. Normally the hot water should destroy them, but as it is they are getting through the dishwashers onto clean plates. »

«Is that serious?» considered carefully before answering. «Yes and no. It probably accounts for some of the intestinal flu you spoke of, but that is not too serious in itself. The way in which it might become dangerous is if we happened to get a disease carrier in the hospital »[Haily; 241] the other side of the ward, Mrs Everett was telling Mrs Myers all the details of the operation for crushing thephrenic nerve she had undergone the day before (p. 302) .. Miss Blakeley s set-back is most unfortunate, most unfortunate. Particularly when she had made such remarkable progress. Her last X-ray was most encouraging, most encouraging. The cavity was healing well, her weight greatly improved, her temperature normal. (P.199) s got a temperature of one hundred and two, and she s had a haemorrhage. I couldn t pick up anything with my stethoscope, but that means nothing. (P. 75) had turned his attention back to the body.

«We'll go on now to examine ...» Pearson stopped and peered down. He reached for a knife and probed gingerly. Then he let out a grunt of interest.

«McNeil, Seddons, take a look at this.» moved aside, and the pathology resident leaned over the area that Pearson had been studying. He nodded. The pleura, normally a transparent, glistering membrane covering the lungs, had a thick coating of scarring- a dense, white fibrous tissue. It was a signal of tuberculosis; whether old or recent they would know in a moment. He moved aside for Seddons. «Palpate the lung, Seddons.» It was Pearson. «I imagine you'll find some evidence there.» Surgical resident grasped the lungs, probing with his fingers. The cavities beneath the surface were detectable at once. He looked up at Pearson and nodded. McNeil had turned to the case- history papers.

«Was there a chest X-ray on admission?» Pearson asked.resident shook his head. «The patient was in shock. There sa note here it wasn t done »[Haily; 40]

Two of the student nurses moved back instinctively from the table.shook his head .Within reason there is no danger of infection here. Tuberculosis is a respiratory disease. But because of what we learned today, those who have been close to this man will be kept under observation and given periodic checks for several years to come. (P.23) Bartletwas continuing.
